Adopt a Room!!

Posted by: Patricia on: October 26, 2009

It’s hard to make the time to come in for a whole day to do a service project, and it is also hard to donate “stuff” or money for a project too in this economy, so I was hoping some groups would consider doing something in-between.

Adopt a Room in a Shelter  for a specified period of  time (See attached Click Here to see Options).  GNM has 2 Shelters. (one is a duplex, so 3 units total).  Here is how it works:

A GROUP (maybe a small group, a teen group, a family, a group of friends….) commit to care for a room in the shelter for 1 year.  ALL the rooms are currently in very good condition.  Your group would evaluate the rooms after a resident leaves the shelter and offers to care for the room before the next resident comes in.  This may include paint, restocking missing items, restock pantry ( if kitchen is your adopted room), Hangers (if bedroom is your adopted room),  organize…whatever your group prefers to do.

  • Example: Bathroom.  The group/family that adopts it would come in and clean/decorate/restock the bathroom.  During the residents stay the group is welcome to bring in any items during their stay too.  Most residents stay about 2-3 months a year (some longer, some shorter)  so your average service project would be about 4 times a year.

Here are the rooms to choose from

  1. Master Bedroom
  2. Bathroom
  3. Children’s Room
  4. Family Room
  5. Kitchen

Pick a room that you feel most comfortable with.  If you have children (and extra toys) pick the children’s room.  If you are past that stage, maybe the Master Bedroom or Kitchen.  You get my idea.  Please contact me if you would like more information.  It is a small committment that could make a HUGE impact.  If we all just take a little..it adds up to be a whole lot!

Click below for a handout to sign your group/family/friends up for a specified period of time.

In AWE of God’s Provision

Posted by: Patricia on: October 20, 2009

I left my house this morning and went to a new shelter for a service project.  I  prayed for God to Provide according to His Plan and again I am BLOWN AWAY.  I asked for a team to come up to give me 90 minutes of their time to clean and instead I got BLESSED!  This shelter got deep cleaned ceiling to floors, carpets steam cleaned professionally, a kitchen table set, curtains, toys, wardrobes, bedding, carpets, decore…the list goes on!!

My favorite part of the day was when the family walked in and the little kids who never met me before hugged my legs and said thank you before they even saw their bedrooms. And I was able to sit with them and explain to them that the Lord Provided all this.

There was a single mom, a 10-year-old girl, 5-year-old boy, and a 7 week old baby that had NOTHING 4 days ago and a HOME today.  They can go to school or work with proper clothes, walk on clean floors, sleep with warm blankets, eat on plates.  Over the past few days,  donations came in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from diapers, to food, to dolls, to money, to clothes….the list goes on.  BUT here is the deal: We are not done! PLUS a new family might be moving in to the duplex next door by the end of the week that we have not met yet.

Here is the list of items needed, let me know if you can help.

  • 10 year old girls wears size 12/14 pants, 10/12 shirts
  • Boy 4T, 5T  He needs pants and boys underwear
  • 3-6 months clothing
  • Baby bottles and a bottle brush
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Mom needs size 6 shoes! (wearing her daughter’s right now)
  • Diaper bag
  • Baby Toys
  • Pajamas for the kids
  • Food donations
  • Halloween Costumes
  • lightbulbs
  • Drip pans for Stove Top (under coils)
  • Drain Board for dishes

The Shelters have some projects that are needed and would love for a small group, a family, a teen group, a friend group to step forward to offer their services.  We have small projects and some larger.  If you have any interest in any projects with this Shelter or any of our local ministries please feel free to contact me at Pszyman@comcast.net for more information

Tomorrow (Tuesday) if you have 90 minutes to help us clean a shelter that would be great!  Two Options:

  • Meet at Long Hollow Upper Parking Lot at 9:00 (leave by 9:15)  to either donate item or to follow each other to Shelter
  • Meet at Shelter.  Take Long Hollow all the way to Gallatin.  Make a left at light. (golf course).  When you go under the overpass make your next LEFT onto Walnut Crest.  Go to 238/240 Duplex.  White with Black shutters. (park in either driveway.

My cell is 418-9377 if you get lost.  :)

Update on Service Project

Posted by: Patricia on: October 17, 2009

This Tuesday,  if  you can help clean  the Walnut Crest Shelter meet us at the Upper Parking Lot of LHBC at 9:00.  It is about 10 minutes away from that location.  Praying for at least 5 people but 10 would be PERFECT!!  Estimated time is 90 minutes.

The home is in Gallatin, so if you live closer to Gallatin than LHBC let me know I will give you directions.

Service Projects?

Posted by: Patricia on: October 16, 2009

ANY group ready??  Looking for a Service Project?  Went to a new shelter this week and it has a small list of projects needed.  Small Group? Large Group? Teen Project?  Family project? Look at some of the possible projects.  The shelter consists of 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a family room and a bathroom.  Here is my current list:

  1. CLEAN.  I would love a group who would clean it!
  2. Repairs.  Anybody handy?  Min. skill level repairs.
  3. Paint.  Depending on your size group, pick a room or more than one room.
  4. Supply.  If a group is gifted with “giving” the shelter does have some missing items.

OR

Adopt a room?  There are 5 rooms in the shelter.  Would you be willing to adopt a room?  Your group can clean, paint, supply or decorate one “adopted” room.

Service Project???

Posted by: Patricia on: October 16, 2009

I had the priviledge of being asked to help with an initiative called Operation Crazy Love.  This group has sided up with local ministries to help them as they help others.  One of them is called Good Neighbor Missions.  GNM is a wonderful Non-Profit Organization that helps people is a variety of ways that are struggling economically.  They supply needs and items to them, help families pay their bills, but in extreme cases will house them in a Shelter.  Yesterday, me and a friend Beth went to a Shelter that is housing a Single Mom, her 10 yr old Daughter, 5 year old son, and 7 week old baby.  The Shelter was nice but as we walked it we felt called to provide as the Lord has provided.

I am seeking woman, men,  teens, small groups, or friends to come together to pour out God’s Blessing on a family I feel drawn to support.  Here are some ideas that came to mind as we walked and prayed in the house.

  • As soon as possible I would love a team to Deep Clean the shelter.  It is small, 4 rooms total,  and in very good condition to begin with, so this is a one day project.
  • Stock!  I tried to imagine coming home from work, getting kids to do homework or eat dinner with the supplies in the home. Uhhh there were none.  I am asking you tho think about what you use around the house as ‘normal’ to be donated.  Example, Pens, Paper, Pencils, a Table (there was NO table to eat or do homework on) no kitchen table, coffee table, end table….) There were 2 plates, no cups, no pots and pans, pillows….etc. (e-mail me for a detailed list).
  • Cosmetic Recovery.  Although not necessary I would love for the children in the home to feel loved not temporary.  The children had a broken cardboard box as a toy box with 2 toys in the bottom of it.  Friends, have you looked around your house lately!  I bet we even have brand new un-opened toys tucked in closets!
  • Clothes.  From what I gathered I saw that each family member had about 2 outfits to switch between.  For a 10 yr old girl and a 5 yr old boy this sure could be sad going to school each day.
  • Here are some Misc.  requests….PAINT! Window treatments, lightbulbs, trash can (there was none), laundry basket, area rug, kids supplies, towels, kids bedding, a small piece of dry wall, decorations, books, school supplies, a chair, a table, pajamas, woman’s clothes, Halloween candy, mixing bowls, baking supplies…..

Please E-mail me or Face Book me if you are available to Serve in Time or Donation to this Project.  The first item needed is New Born Diapers!  Then Let’s get to work!!  You ready!
